My son is just 10 and quite interested in learning TT. And his dream is of becoming a world champ !!! (not sure if its tool early for him to say this). He is prepared to do anything to be a master and hold the trophy !! My full support is with him, and am confident he will do it one day !!!! But dont know where to start. Should I buy a TT table for him first ? or 10 years is too young for him to start ? if he starts now, will it affect his studies ? need some guidance from the experts pls. I am based in NZ.
Hi,
Firstly it is great that he has such a passion for something.
Ten is not too young for him to start. I think even before buying him a table try to find a club that he can go to and play regularly. Then work on developing his basics well. We can help with this through our online lessons as well.
What town are you in?
His studies can be fitted in with his training. That is all a long way off as yet. First see how he develops and enjoys the game over the next few years.
We explore what is the best preparation to get off to a good start in a match.

There is a good club in Auckland that has a good range of coaches and players. It would be best to get him there to start with. Here is their website. http://www.sportsground.co.nz/aucklandtabletennis/

You are never too young to enjoy playing table tennis :)
By the way, I was 6 when I started and I still love it.

If you want to be a World Champion, is actually a lil bit old
azhar bhabha Posted 12 years ago
julio is absolutely right. at ten years of age players are already playing and winning tournaments.

10years old is not to young but for me it's to old because I started playing table tennis at the age of 6
Nathan S Posted 11 years ago
10 years not to young but not too late, one of my country's best players started at age 11 and won bronze at class 10 para table tennis 2012 in london.

My son is 2 years old and I've started training him.
Working on serves at the moment away from the table.
I don't think the toss is entirely legal, and he doesn't make contact with the bat - but he enjoys it!

There was a girl who started at 5 and a half in my club. so it is not early.

it is too late in china. mostly they start it to play from 3-4 years old. 10 years old can beat u15 to the other countries.
tabletennisman lu Posted 11 years ago
i started playing when i was 6
Kaustubh Kulkarni Posted 10 years ago
I too started when I was 10

Same here
If he just works on his ability to hit the ball in the table consistently then that will be a great start. See how enthusiastic he is and then start teaching him the counter hit & push strokes.

I've seen 10 years old kids playing who would probably beat me!
I've also seen much younger kids who were so short that they were serving and doing forehand drives in the same position as I am when I'm smashing a very high ball, and they did it well. Amazing.
10 years is not too young to start playing table tennis. Definitely not.
Ciao,
J-B.

I Agree with Alois, find a club for him. He is not too young but, important, it's not late. I had to say that it is a great sport, it will affect his studies but in a positive way :-)

I just made a quiz, weird huh, about what style of table tennis you should play in. It's my first quiz and I'm probably not an expert, but I urge you to try it! http://gotoquiz.com/N05Us
