Jumping Backhand

Strokes

Why is it that I often see professional players sort of do an awkward jump, lifting their legs into the air when struggling to hit a backhand?

Hi John,

This sometimes happens when they are caught short for time.  By jumping they are reacting to the pace of the ball.  It is certainly not ideal as the instability will lead to more errors.  It is just a compensation for their lack of time.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.
