Mental Preparation
How do I maintain correct technique during intense matches with all the pressure? I seem to not maintain my technique for spinny topspin shot for countering etc.
Hi Nathan,
It's a common challenge to maintain your technique under the pressure of intense matches. Here are some strategies to help you keep your topspin shots effective, even when the stakes are high:
Try to recreate match-like conditions in your training sessions. This could involve setting up points where you must execute specific shots under pressure, or having practice matches where you focus particularly on maintaining your technique during crucial points.
Develop a pre-point routine that includes deep breathing, specific thoughts, or a particular sequence of actions. This routine can help you stay calm and focused, enabling you to execute your shots with better technique.
Regularly review your matches, especially those where you felt under pressure. Analyse if there's a pattern to when your technique starts to falter and discuss these moments with a coach or a training partner who can provide feedback and corrective tips.
Remember, maintaining technique under pressure is a skill that improves with practice and experience. Keep these points in mind during your training, and gradually, you'll find yourself performing better under match pressure.
In this week's master class we discuss how you can analyse your own technique. You first need to understand what good technique is and then you need to be able to see yourself playing.
