How do you learn where an opponent is going to return your service to enable you to 3rd ball him in the first place if I could work that out I would be ready to attack his return.

Hi Syd,

You can never be sure but in general a lot of returns come cross court, especially if the receiver isn't thinking about his return.

After a while you start to get the feel of where someone will return.  That is why a lot of the top players on'y use a couple of serves so that they get used to the returns.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
