I am playing against a right handed player , he serves his side spin serves down the table edge onto my back hand and I face lot of difficulty in returning his serves  where I lose most of my points.  Can you please explain to return those servers which are fast spinning down the back hand for a left hander.

Hi Ganesh,

One of the keys here is to move a little to your right to get a better position on the backhand.  I see a lot of players trying to hit the ball from outside the line of their body.  By taking a small step you will get better position and be able to return this.

Because the natural angle you are expecting is across court to your forehand, often the balance is moving over in that direction instead of getting behind the ball on the backhand.  Also by tracking the ball well you may be able to react a little quicker.

When in position you can make a Backhand Topspin stroke.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
