Hi coach,

If a person having long pimple and does the under spin serve or top spin serve this will generate the same spin.

My understanding is correct?

Hi Kedar,

If you attempt a topspin serve with long pimples, the amount of topspin you can generate will be significantly less compared to using smooth rubber. The same goes for an underspin serve – it's likely to produce less underspin. In summary, no, the spin will not be the same as if you were using smooth rubber. The effects are generally subtler. This characteristic can be used strategically to confuse opponents who are not familiar with playing against long pimples. Hope that clears up your query.

I just played a person who occasionally used his long pips to serve and it was difficult.  He hit a simple backspin serve with his long pips but when I pushed it back they went up and off the table.  I guess that I should probably flick or just block the return.  I'm just learning to flick so I don't have confidence in it yet.  I guess that I will try just guiding the ball back with a block.
