Alois,

What is the effect if I serve long backhand using my long pips ox to my opponent?  Is the ball rotating top spin? Likewise with the short pips ox. I mean, when I serve short backspin with my short pips ox, does the ball rotates top spin? My understanding is, if I chop serve with either the lp ox and sp ox it goes backspin.

One of my better player in my club, told me not to chop serve. He said if I chop, the ball will bends the pips thus it acts like smooth surface rubber. Also the ball will not wobble.

I am confuse now. Please clarify for me.

Thanks you.

Rodrigo

Hi Rodrigo,

When you serve with the short pips the ball will get some backspin but not as much as with inverted rubber.

When you serve with long pips ox the ball will have little or no spin because the longer pips don't grip the ball.  Because of the inertia of the ball as it travels forward it will start rotating slightly forward.

Alois,

Yes I understand now the effects like you mentioned about backspin serve with the long pips ox and short pips ox. So,  if I topspin with the short pips ox the ball will rotate forward more than the long pips topspin serve. Is this correct?

Sorry for asking more questions.

Alois,

How can I produce/create wobble effect using long pips ox either serving or returning. Do I have to hit the ball hard? Likewise with the short ox.

Thanks. I surely appreciated all your help.

Rodrigo

With the long pimples you can get some wobble if they serve with sidespin and you hit the ball flat and firmly.  The short pimples are not for creating the wobble effect.

I sometimes have fun against long pimple blocker by doing sidespin and it returns with reverse sidespin. Then I spin the other way.

But doing topspin or backspin is way more optimal than wasting energy to generating sidespin.

When people serve to me with their pimples rubber I usually consider it a no-spin serve and attack with topspin (flick if its short). Usually they start serving with the smooth side. One player at my club has pimples on both sides and I am able to attack his serves like crazy.
