Long pips vs. short pips

Hi pingskills,

I recently played a friendly doubles match where my partner used long pips on his backhand and inverted on his forehand. Our opponents were one attacker, and one player with inverted forehand and short pips backhand. I am a very aggressive attacker. So the match had a quite a bit of variety.

I can play both long and short pips effectively(after lots of practice), but when by partner hits with his long pips to the short pips i started to get confused of the spin that would then come to me. I find its too much to think about at once(what spin was played to the long pips, what the long pips player did, what spin that created and then what would come off the short pips, and what the short pips player did to the ball). if i made an error in judgement the opposing attacker could capitalize.

The opposing attacker also had problems with this.

I was wondering if you had any tips for this problem?

Thanks

Hi Tevia,

Sound slike some interesting combinations.

It is a fairly rare problem. Once you have a true command for the long pips and spins, you will find it a little easier.

Since you know the basics of the spins, it is a matter of keeping track of what type of spin has been played.  You will also start to recognise the different flight paths of the ball that come with different spins.  This will eventually help you as well.

I don't have any short cuts to this.  Just keep playing the game and you will learn all this with the more experience you have against it.
