Loops hitting bat edge

Hello,

I am pretty much aggressive top spin and block player.

Anyway, my play still relies a lot on block, which is good, but I wish to develop looping and smashing - like a fine tuning.

1. However, while forehand looping, when I wish to attack, I am constantly hitting the ball with bat edge or even miss it entirely.

2. Also, when I get slightly higher backspin ball in bad serve return, I always hit the ball in the net - either when I smash or loop.

3. I play badminton a lot, which I really like, but it happens that I lose sense while playing TT afterwards - bad practice?

Can you give me some advice? Thank you!

Hi Ivan,

For the forehand loop, open the angle of your racket.  Really focus on getting a solid contact on the ball to start with.  As you get more comfortable with the contact you can start to brush the ball more.  Also make sure that the angle of your racket isn't changing during the stroke.

For the high backspin ball you need to open the angle of your racket and still put a little topspin on the ball to counter the backspin on the ball.  For our Premium members we do have an Ask the Coach video response on this. Smash/Topspin High Chopped Ball.

Re playing Badminton.  I think you can adjust between the two.  The Badminton will also help with your endurance.

Tnx Alois,

Good remark for keeping bat angle the same :) I will try the second tip with a chopper tonight - after badminton :)

Another interesting thing that I have noticed about "back-swing" - the amount of arm swing before bat hits the ball:

When back swing is longer, I miss a lot, but ball faster and harder to return.

When back swing is shorter (a fast hitch), I am more accurate, but the ball is not too spiny I'd say.

Should I try to define "my own movement anatomy" and keep it always the same or those back swing variations are OK?

Hi Ivan,

The backswing variations are OK to give you different speed and spin.  Still try to control the swing though to make sure you are keeping the bat on an even path.

So, even path and the same bat angle. Tnx!
