I have some pretty decent footwork except for the lunge. At what level should I work on that skill? What are good ways to practice it, on and off the table?

Hi Paul,

In the ideal world you don't want to be lunging at the ball. In the extreme case when you are out of position you can lunge at the ball.

Training the lunge action is a good way of strengthening your legs for general footwork movements because you are moving your legs in the full motion.

Thank you. I will practice the step over lunge (like the pros use) but will only use when absolutely necessary. Do you have any suggestions on how to practice it?

You could do it with multi ball.  Get someone to put the ball wide to your backhand where you pivot and play a forehand and then get the nest ball fed wide to the forehand where you cover it with your forehand using the crossover footwork step.
