Multiball or One Ball

Training

Hello Pingskills,

My partner and I practice 2 or 3 times a week for 2 hours each time. We have been wondering whether it is better to take it in turns to feed multiball to each other or to do drills by hitting the ball back to each other.

Thank you

matt

Hi Matt,

I think doing a mixture of the types of practice is a good idea.  With multiball you can get more consistency and regularity of the feeding.  You can also increase the speed of the shots and reactions.  However, with someone blocking you get a much more realistic feel for the shots and you are tracking the same ball through the rally.

I think it is great that you have a practice partner that you can train with regularly.

A key tactic in Table Tennis is to serve short, get a long return and then attack the third ball with a topspin stroke. It's important in matches to make sure you can make that third ball consistently on the table so you can maintain the pressure on your opponent. This week we give you a number of exercises to work on your consistency.

matt, you can be glad that you have a sparing partner.

I have not so much luck.

90% of my training is done with an old, inconsistent robot that even cannot shot a spinless ball
