Hi Pingskills,

i wanted to make my own custom paddle but i would like a few suggestions for the rubbers, amount of foam and blade. i'm defensive player and prefer to chop or push the ball and rely on my spin to win me points most of the time and i play well with heavier paddles. I greatly appreciate ur help.

Hi Basel,

As you are a defensive player, go for a slow or allround blade. Again for the rubbers you want something that is quite slow with good control. There are so many choices out there it is difficult to know what is a good choice. If you are part of a club you could see what other defensive players are using and even see if you can borrow their bat.

If anyone has suggestions for Basel for a defensive custom bat, please leave a comment.

One option is to get a special combination blade which has different speeds on either side (usually slow side for LP or antispin, faster side for inverted).  Lots of choices out there but if you have the $$, one option is a hand-made blade by the German manufacturer Re-Impact (http://re-impact-blades.com/).  I myself got the Re-Impact Tachi.  A cheaper option is the Donic Alligator Combi.

i was looking on the net for good rubbers and blades and i like the butterfly flextra and mark 5 combination with a timo ball all blade and was wondering if this combination is good for a player like me.

Hi Basel,

That would have enough control at this stage.

i have decided to go with the current combination of the flextra and mark 5 and timo boll all blade but i was wondering, where do you get the sponge from? do you get it with the blade or do you have to buy it separately? and if the latter, how do you glue it on to the blade? sorry for the storm of questions but i got really confused about the sponge thing.

Glad that you have decided on the rubber.  The sponge under the rubber will come with it.  If you want to learn to put the rubber on the blade take a look at our lesson on Replacing Your Rubber.  This will show you how to do it.  You will also need the special glue.
