Net rules

Hi,

Recently I was the umpire at a tournament and the following situation occured. Player 1 hits the ball, the ball hits the net, goes over player to 2's side, but does not fall on the table, instead, it falls on the net assembly and then on the floor. I awarded this as player 2's point. Player 1's coach and parents kept telling me the net and all accessories count as the playing surface and said it should have been player 1's point. The head referee was not available, so under pressure I made them replay the point. What official rules apply in this case? I checked the ITTF website but couldn't find the answer.

 Thanks!

Hi Janzy,

We have consulted with Graeme Ireland, International Referee a great source fof information regarding anything to do with rules.  This is his answer:

The umpire was correct in his initial ruling. The relevant clauses are:
2.2.1  The net assembly shall consist of  the net,  its suspension and  the supporting posts, including the clamps attaching them to the table.
2.7.1  The  ball, having been served or returned, shall be struck so that it passes over or around the net assembly and touches the opponent's court, either directly or after touching the net assembly.

Therefore the ball has never touched the opponent's court and the point is awarded to player 2.

Regards
Graeme

Thanks Graeme.
