Strokes

So i have been playing table tennis for around a year and 1/4 and i have pretty much mastered my backhand slice (where you put your bat near parallel to the table and it generates back-side spin) and a decent forehand slice, I also have a OK loop(not mastered) which has more spin than speed and a average FH/BH smash. What would you recommend working on?

Also during competitions i tend to play really defensive and not want to play my attacking strokes because im not confident in them. is there any sort of way to cure that.

Hi Raymond,

Keep working on these strokes.  You will develop the confidence to play them in matches once they become more natural.

Practice the topspin against backspin ball a lot.  This is really relevant for a game situation as this happens a lot in a game.

Practicing this will help you to feel more confident in making this stroke in the match.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
