Hi Henry,
Table tennis can become a really complex game when you start to think about the different angles and spins that you need to counteract.
The best teacher in these situations is experience. You will start to understand the angles you need to make to get the most effective strokes including serves.

Crossover Footwork
When you need to reach that really wide ball the regular shuffle step just won't get you there in time so you need to use the crossover step. This is essentially a running action to get you to the ball as fast as possible.
