Hello.I recently started playing table tennis and I find it really enjoyable. The grip I use is the penhold one.  I saw a few videos on Youtube with penhold-grip players using special penhold bats. My bat is nothing special..just an ordinary one.So my question is ''Is it good to play with penhold grip when using an ordinary bat, which is not specialy suited for that kind of grip''.I have seen many videos with shakehanders and penholders using a bat exactly like mine. On the other hand I have seen videos with penholders using different bats,so I'm not sure which type of bat is going to be better for me to use.Thank you and sorry for my english.

Regards!

Hi Alex,

You can try using a special penhold bat.  There are two types.  The Chinese and the Japanese.

The Chines bat is basically like a shakehand bat with a shorter handle.  The Japanese bat has a built up handle on one side.

You need to feel both of them in your hand and see which feels comfortable.  If this is too difficult, just go for the Chinese bat as it is more like what you are using.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
