Penholder serve to shake hand

Strokes

Dear Coach,

I have started to get serious with my table tennis playing, and I am stuck between penhold and shake hand. My serves for penhold are scoring me tons of points, but my shake hand is finishing the job after the serves. Is there anyway to go from a penhold serve to a shake hand after the serve and continue the match with a shake hand instead?

Thanks

Hi Samuel,

What you can do is play with a shakehand grip but alter it slightly for the serve.  By taking the three fingers away from the handle and placing in a fist behind the handle you get the same benefits as you do with a penhold grip by allowing your wrist to work more freely.  Then it is easy to get back to the normal shakehand grip for the next shot.  This is a better option than trying to change between shakehand and penhold.

Give this grip a try and let me know how it works for you.
