Hi Maaz,

I don't think there is any relevance to the real game.  What do others think about this?  I may be saying this because I am totally hopeless at these games.

Actually Alois isn't wrong. Table tennis games are really funny, but it isnt to helpfull to improve your game, because when you play it you just have one objective: Hit the balll forward looking for a way to hit the ball, and sometimes try to put a lil bit of sidespin on the ball. At first you'll think "isn't it the same objective in real TT?" and yes, you're going to be right, but in the game you dont have even a Forehand or a Backhand, you don't need to move yourself from your position, you dont need to think in backspin or topspin and neither in how to counter it, you cant choose your game style (chopper, attacker, close to the table attacker, far to the table attacker, blocker, etc), it is just as i said in the begin, just hit the ball forward. The only aspect i think this games are good for, is to improve your reaction, but there isnt other aspects i think you can improve whit a game.

In other sports, videogames can be helpfull, for example, in lawn tennis, you can look the technique because the game players always have a perfect technique, or soccer games can improve your strategies, but anyways it's different to move yourself than moving your Pc's mouse or your joistick

The best way (and the only one) to improve your game in any sport is to practice, practice, and practice, and see the champions play...

I agree with this. I'm a good table tennis player in reality, but in the video game world, I suck. This is like asking if playing guitar hero would help you learn to play a real guitar. It's just not gonna work.

There is a table tennis game that is slightly different than the rest.  In 2005 Rockstar put out a game called Rockstar Table Tennis for the XBOX 360, that featured a few playable characters, and a tournament mode.  The graphics engine used in this game went on to feature in the classic game Red Dead Redemption.  I had a copy, then it was stolen, so my wife picked up a used one for US $1.96 used.  It is a fascinating game, which although it may not make me a better player, it certainly can help a beginner learning about different spins, point construction, and even a few grip pointers.  Seriously, it's an older game, but still is played freequently in our house!
