How am I in the table when serving and receiving? Is it the same or different?

Hi Byron,

When serving you can stand fairly close to the table. For then pendulum serve you can even have some of your body past the end line at the side of the table.

When receiving, as a guide, stand just far enough away so that you can just touch the table with your bat in your receiving position. You want to be close enough that with one step you can reach if the ball is served short and far enough back that if the ball is served long and fast you can cover it and play a topspin stroke.

Fake Movements

After the ball has left the server's bat, they can no longer affect the spin that is on the ball. Any movements after the contact are referred to as fake movements and are meant to confuse you as the receiver. You need to focus on the contact to read the spin.
