Coach, what is the bet way to perfect basic strokes as nowadays im often without a partner so any way i could practice basic strokes alone? Secondly i have an unorthodox stiff handshake grip which limits me from using my backhand well should i work on my grip and loosen up a little?

Hi Subhan,

A good way to practice strokes without a table is to do shadow play.  Stand in front of a mirror and do the stroke 100 times.  Watch to see what the stroke looks like.  Focus on the start and finish positions in particular.

You can then also hit against a wall and focus on the movement of the stroke.

You should focus on the grip to make sure it is relaxed.  The bat should be able to be taken out of your hand easily.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
