I am an Indian. I am a attacker and a good state and national player. I am planning to be a defense player as my coach advised. Can you please tell how to start practicing defensive strokes and how to be a good defensive player?

Hi Abhi,

I think one of the best ways to practice defence is with multi ball.  Get the feeder to hit topspin hits.  You can do a lot of footwork drills as this is important for a defensive player.

You can also get some training with someone that is good at making topspins against backspin.

Overall though it is about putting in the hours on the table and doing good focused training that will get you to improve the fastest.

Work on a set Training plan with a 2 hour session starting with a warm up then some Training drills, some Match drills some games and then some service practice as we outline in our Training Plan template.

Beating Defenders

Against defenders you've generally got a bit more time to make your attack and so you can be more selective on which ball to target. Think about finding your opponent's weaker side and whether they prefer a faster ball coming towards them or a slower ball. Try different spins, speed and placement! Hi Abhi,

Which state do you play for? Could you tell me when are the trials held for the selection?

Thanks and good luck.
