Training
Hi Alois/Jeff,
I am having problems training my touch. I cannot seem to impart much spin on my serves and loops and hence my shots become very inconsistent. I did some searching on the web and found that many people use the method of piercing a chopstick through a ball and try spinning it. But I just cannot stand to destroy any ping pong ball just for that reason. Without a table, what methods are there to practice touch?
Hi Jeremy,
Things like bouncing the ball on your bat and spinning the ball in the air can help. Also hit the ball onto the floor and see if you can make the ball come back to you or curve on the floor or make other patterns.
All these things will help with your touch. Also look at our lesson on Practicing Alone which will give you some ideas.
The idea of a chopstick is a good one or you can use an old CD or DVD disc on a stick and get that to spin around.
This week's master class is called Perfecting the Push. To have a great push you need to first see how much backspin is on the ball as it is coming towards you. Then you need to alter your stroke to counter this backspin. You also need to concentrate on generating your own backspin to make it harder for you opponent.
