Hi Anthony,

The best thing you can do is to keep the bat clean after you use it. The easiest way to do this is to simply wipe off any dust and ball marks during and after your play. You can simply breathe on the bat and wipe it with your hand. Some people don't like this idea because of the grease in your hands but I have always found this effective. Otherwise you can wipe it clean with a cloth that is slightly damp with some water.

Also make sure you store your bat in a bat cover. You never want to leave your bat in direct sunlight as that will deteriorate your rubber.

The fact is that your rubber is going to wear out and need to be replaced. The length of time really depends on how often you play.

Choosing a Table Tennis Bat

Make sure you buy a table tennis bat that is suitable for your level and allows you to develop your technique. For your first bat we recommend the PingSkills Rook, and when you upgrade to a custom bat we recommend the PingSkills Touch with Mark V or Rakza 7.

Some of my friends put paraffin oil on the sponge,  I actually never tried this but they say the tackiness of the old rubber improved from almost an antispin
