Please help me with this and thanks in advance.
Hi Chandrachur,
This is a tricky area of the game and one that a lot of players have trouble with. It is a long term learning process to get it right. It is important that you learn each time you touch the ball and it goes off sideways. You will learn by really watching what is happening to the ball. If the ball goes off to the left then the next time you need to angle your bat so that it faces more to the right and vice versa.
Don't try to do too much with the return but just use the angle of your bat to get it back. We have a series of lessons in our Premium lessons that you our Premium members can watch that really helps in this area. The lessons are under the heading of Receiving Secrets.
A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
