Problems with the Backhand Topspin

Hello Pingskills,

I guess it is a stupid question but I found that I can do the forehand topspin quite smoothly, but on the other hand when I try to do the Backhand topspin I can't get a strong grip on the racket. My bat seems to fly off my hand in the direction of my swing. If I hold the bat too stiffly, it gets really difficult to get the swing and to get the bat swing through whereas if I hold the bat too softly, it flies off my hand.

Is there any way to get more power on the topspin alongside more spin. Would really love to hear the solution from you, since backhand plays a very important role in a rally and is equally as necessary as the forehand as you said.

With regards,

Fayad

Hi Fayad,

You can grip the bat lightly on the backhand the same way as for the forehand.  It is a matter of getting the right grip and the power in the right places.  Start with a normal grip and then just relax the grip on all of your fingers.  Perhaps you are relaxing too much in some places which loses the grip on the bat.

I would be interested if others have this issue and have found a good solution.

Hello Alois,

One thing is, I can easily get the power and the spin on my forehand quite easily even if I don't relax it much or if I do. But the difficult part for me is just getting that balance between power and spin on the Backhand topspin.

Hi Fayad,

Yes it is a difficult balance sometimes.  Each shot is different.  You can vary each ball, sometimes faster and flatter and sometimes slower with more spin.

Hello Alois,

I agree with your point. I will definitely try it out. Thanks!

I had exactly the same problem and I solved it by using overgrip. Many people don't like it though.
