To help keep the push low should I hit the ball right off of the bounce as it is rising? or at the top of the ball's travel? or just after the top of the ball's rise on the way down?

Hi Jim.

Try at first to hit the ball early.  This will help to get the ball lower and also shorter on your opponent's side.  Focus on a brushing contact on the ball and a soft hand as well.

Take a look at the lesson on The Push in Detail for some more help.
