Hello, hope you're all doing fine.

My coach has been saying that I have a habit of lifting myself with the ball when I do backhand topspin. I also kind of duck lower when I do a more aggressive forehand topspin counter hit, similar to how Fan Zhendong sometimes does his forehand counter hits. I was wondering if this is something to worry about. My backhand topspin is fine I'd say, many people complement me on how great my backhand is, but since my coach told me that I don't know what to do now. Coach said that I could duck down when doing a forehand topspin counterhit, as that's more of a personal style choice rather than a technique, but he wants me to practice it "the right way" before adding your own personal touches to your moves. However, he didn't say the same with the backhand topspin. Should I be worried about this habit? I wouldn't say I lift myself too high, just a little to move along with the ball and to make the stroke a bit easier... Well, actually, does this make the stroke easier or more effective? Because I'm lifting myself with the ball, I'm assuming it slightly adds a bit more topspin, but when I do the stroke the coach tells me to do, it's not that it's uncomfortable, it's just that I all of a sudden start moving with the ball. So what do you think?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Gabriel,

Try to play the backhand while staying stable and not lifting.  This will help with the recovery for the next ball and it will also add some consistency to the stroke.

With the forehand it is better to sty stable as well.  I think the ducking of the head is often a sign of tension in the shoulder area.  In short, listen to your coach...
