Why do most top players start the pendulum serve with the racket close to the table with the left edge of the racket pointing almost upward? Does this help the serve in any way?

Thanks , Phil

Hi Phil,

At the highest level, they use the racket like a sling shot.  By starting with the bat near the table it helps them to sing the bat back and then forward to generate the spin.  It is like a backward and forward whipping action.

To clarify my question further, my main question is why do top players start with their wrist turned and the left edge of the bat turned upward? Does it enhance the wrist motion or something?

Thanks,

Phil

I don’t think it does enhance the wrist position.  Maybe just something that players see and copy.
