Dear Coach:

How to return Ma Lin's ghost serve?   I would like to know whether it is an unreturnable serve.   Does he use that serve very often in a match or as a surprise weapon at a critical juncture of a match.  Whether a player of a class like Ma Long cannot return that ghost serve?

I watching your video demonstration of that serve.  Whether we can return that serve with a forehand flick at the top of the bounce.

Kindly give your valuable guidance.  Thanks for your feedback and continued support.

With Warm Regards,
Ram

Hi Ram,

There is no such thing as an unreturnable serve because whatever the serve, a player can adjust to it.

The Ma Lin serve is just a slower backspin serve.  In a match he would tend to serve the ball reasonably fast with backspin that would not come back quite as quickly.

To return this serve you need to allow for the amount of backspin on the ball by adjusting the angle of your racket.  Your racket would have to be very flat, facing the ceiling.

You can try to flick a backspin serve, but the margin for error is very small.
