Return the push

Strokes

Good day coach. I'm a new member of your site, and a ping-pong lover too. Could I ask you a question?

My opponent often gives me a long and strong push (backhand or forehand). When I return this one by a push too, the ball usually bounces very high on the other side and he easily makes a complete smash. May you tell me the best way to return this push. Thanks a lot!

Hi Vu,

If his push comes long you should try to topspin it back to him.  If you push it back, you will give him the opportunity ti attack first.

If you are finding that you don't have enough time, take a small step further aaway from the table to allow yourself more time to hit it.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.

Dear coach,

Thanks for you advice. It really works. I feel very confident for the topspin against that long push. May I ask you a question more, please.

How can I return the push that the ball falls at the middle on my side. I want to use a topspin or counter to return this one but the fact is that I'm an Asian boy with  "not long enough" arms, so I'm confused to choose between 2 ways. How could you tell me the best way to do.

Once again, thanks very much

Hi Vu,

If the ball is in the middle of the table you are best to push the ball back to them.  Try to keep the ball short back on their side and wait for the next opportunity to make the attack if they go long.
