Hi it's Erik. And I just re-subscribe as a member for a year.  My job it's holding a ping pong tournament, and on Wednesday is the semi finals. If I get to the championship match, I will be playing in a pony who occasionally likes to smash the ball towards my backhand side. How should I be prepared to return it? I would also like to learn how to do sides but on the board make it curve how should I be prepared to return it?

Hi Erik,

Thanks for subscribing again.

Good luck with the tournament on Wednesday as well.

One of the main things we talk about is how to stop them from making that smash ball.  Take a look at the I Can't Return That Smash! tutorial.  If he is making a smash then think about the block shot.  Don’t try to do too much with the shot, just put your bat in a good position to return it.  If he has committed to a smash then if you can just return it he may not be recovered to get the next shot back.

Take a look at the tutorial on the Sidespin Forehand Topspin and the Sidespin Backhand Topspin.  These will give you a better idea how to do the shot.  They are both very advanced shots but will be effective if you can make it.

Let me know how you get on.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
