Hi Coaches Alois and Jeff! sam here, I was wondering why a majority of players choose black topsheets for their forehand rubber and Red for the backhand? is this style preference? or is there an advantage here?

Hi Sam,

I haven't really seen any evidence of one colour being better than the other but a lot of players tend to follow what the better players do.

Choosing a Table Tennis Bat

Make sure you buy a table tennis bat that is suitable for your level and allows you to develop your technique. For your first bat we recommend the PingSkills Rook, and when you upgrade to a custom bat we recommend the PingSkills Touch with Mark V or Rakza 7.

I have seen soem rumours that red rubbers are more springy and black rubbers are harder and stickier due to chemical differences in the dyes. I consider it rather a rumour though...

I remember from one of Timo Boll's blogs, in which he prepares his rackets for a tournament, that he mentioned that black rubbers tend to be heavier and that heavier rubbers are harder which he prefers for forhand.

That should be true for sponge. But I seriously doubt that two rubbers differing only by colour have different sponges.
Who knows though,I am not a chemistry master and table tennis equipment is a science on its own.
