Rusty at the start

Strategy

Hello,

Until a couple of months ago, I used to be able to play attacking shots pretty consistently right away. However in between, I had to go away on a business visit and now I am taking almost two sets to start getting my smashes consistently.  The tournament in my office starts this Friday.

Can you please advise on how I should approach this situation and suggest any routines/tips?

Thanks,

Kiran

Hi Kiran,

Probably more of a warm up before the matches.

I used to find a practice session earlier in the day, even if it was a short one would help me if I had to play later in the day.  May also help with the slow start.

If there is time before you start your match, try to have a really good warm up including playing some competitive points.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
