Hi Alois

What is the meaning of seeding in table tennis?

Why Chinese players do not compete against each other until at least the quarter finals. I have never seen Ma long vs Xu Xin in the first or second round of a tournament.

Hi Yap,

The players at the start of the tournament are placed in order of ability according to a raking list or what a group of selectors decide is an appropriate ranking for them.  This will then have a bearing on determines where they are placed in the draw.

That is the reason that the best players don't play each other early int he tournament.  They deliberately separate the better players so that they meet in later rounds.

Is it similar to the world ranking, just that they are counting the players who are attending the tournament?

Yes that is right.  They do it for most tournaments.  Each State and Country will usually have their own ranking system that they use as well.
