hi Alois!

in a state tournament does a serve need more spin or speed with defensers and also with attackers.

Hi Anirudh,

The best thing is to be able to serve the ball short with spin.  At a higher level if you are serving too long they will be able to attack it.  It is too difficult to serve the ball with enough speed to get past your opponent because it has to bounce on your side first and the table isn't very wide.

Even against a defender if you serve the ball too long they are in a comfortable position for the next defensive shot.  You are better off to serve the ball short and keep them close to the table so that when you attack to them it is more effective.
