Hi Coach,

Can i play a flick to sidespin serve. Last time you suggest to use your bat like a rudder to steer the ball back. But i want to attack on sidespin serve so what is your opinion about flick

Best Regards

Hi Ahtesham,

Flicking a sidespin serve can be a good tactic.  I remember our old coach Mr Zhou used to tell us if there is any sidespin at all, then flick, if there is only backspin, then push.

Initially it is best to make sure you are understanding the spin on the ball by steering it back.  Once you have done that, then tactically in a match you can decide what type of stroke you are going to play.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.

The backspin sidespin is still able to be flicked.  The safer option is a short push.
