I was playing table tennis with this old guy, his backhand serve had sidespin so I changed it to the left side and the ball went off flying to the right. That’s the sidespin I usually play against but it keeps flying off. Is there two type of sidespin?

Hi Jason,

The ball can spin both ways but it will be the way that he is hitting the ball.  You need to watch carefully to see the contact he is getting on the ball.

Though with the Backhand serve the ball should spin to your left when you hit it.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
