To generate sidespin, you need to get the ball spinning sideways. You can do this by brushing on the side off the ball. The finer you brush the ball and the faster you swing, the more spin you will generate. With regards to sidespin serves, we cover this in detail in our DVD Serving Secrets Revealed. 

When returning a sidespin stroke, remember that the sidespin will cause the ball to shoot sideways off your bat. The way to counter this is to angle your bat to steer the ball back to where you want it to go. 

Backspin will cause the ball to be dragged downwards towards the net. Therefore you need to counter the spin. You can do this by using a push stroke or by attempting to lift the ball using a topspin stroke.
