Strokes
Hi Alois,
i have watched the video US Open 2013 Highlights: Petrissa Solja vs Ariel Hsing (U/21 Final), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRI4fGrZmK4.
What kind of stroke is Petrissa doing at 0:28? Is it the same stroke at 2:00? Is it a flip or a push? What kind of spin is on the ball?
Thank you for your answer.
Juergen
Hi Juergen,
It is a sidespin push. She looks like she uses it quit often in her game. She will vary the amount of sidespin and topspin or backspin on the ball slightly to make it a little more awkward to return. Haven't seen a shakehand player use it as much or as often as she is using it.
At a basic level this can be a risky stroke because of the sidespin but it is something that she has developed in her game to good effect.
Topspin-to-topspin rallies are fast, dynamic, and can be the key to winning more points! 🏓🔥 Learning how to control these exchanges will help you stay on the attack and put pressure on your opponent.
✅ How to adjust your technique for topspin rallies (compared to topspin vs. block)
✅ Why your stroke should be more forward and how to generate dip with topspin
✅ Tactical strategies – Mix up speed, spin, and placement for better control
✅ How to train this stroke effectively, even without a strong training partner

FYI.. the Youtube video seems to not be embedded properly on this page.
Thanks Asif. We are going to be looking at a way in the future where people can easily embed youtube videos in their questions or comments.

Interesting...I thought that kind of stroke was mostly topspin and therefore not a push.
I've seen some french players use that stroke. That young french player whose name escapes me now and maybe even one of the older players (perhaps Patrick Chila) when I was watching one of the old world championships used this stroke. It seems to be very effective. I'm surprised it is not used more often.
Yeah it is hard to define what it really is. I say a push because she starts below the ball. I think she does put backspin on it as well. In the one she does at 0:28 even though it hits the net and bounces a couple of times after Ariel hits it it seems to go down as if it has backspin on it.
Not totally convinced what to call it...
