Dear coach

I have a problem to return a side spin serve when it is to my back hand corner. I can handle it when it is to forehand. I end up messing if it is to my backhand especially when it is a fast side spin serve.

Can you please suggest some options..

Thank you

Ram

Hi Ram,

The first thing is to make sure you get into a good position to make the return.  Often this serve will go to one side of your body.

Then you can work on making a topspin return if you can off the fast serve.

If you can make a topspin brush the ball quickly to negate the sidespin on the ball.

Take a look at this tutorial as well Returning a Long Sidespin Serve.

Fake Movements

After the ball has left the server's bat, they can no longer affect the spin that is on the ball. Any movements after the contact are referred to as fake movements and are meant to confuse you as the receiver. You need to focus on the contact to read the spin.
