Specialist doubles players

Hi Pingskills,

Has Table Tennis ever had any specialist doubles players? Tennis has hundreds of specialist doubles players who don't even bother with singles. If not, why not? My experience of doubles is usually that it is not the best singles players who win the doubles events, but usually the two players who have the best understanding and who's individual strengths go well together.

Why do people not take doubles more seriously, and realise that with some research into which partner would suit your game and some practice with that person, it would be a good chance to win some games and hopefully some silverware!?

Hi Simon,

I think in the main a good singles player will do well in doubles.  There isn't the level of understanding needed as in Tennis or Badminton because you have to take it in turns.

I think the main thing is to find a left hand, right hand combination which makes doubles a lot easier.  It is true you need to be compatible but I don't think it is as much of a factor as other sports.  I think that if the singles players took doubles more seriously they would be better at it as well. It is easier to win silverware because twice as many players win medals.
