Hi Pingskills,

What are your opinions on whether Table Tennis has become less of a spectator sport? Whenever I speak to a coach, they are quick to say that the 3rd ball is the most important in the rally. I agree with this, but do you think that that 3rd ball philosophy has made the sport less of a spectator sport? A lot of the rallies are over so quickly.

As far as I am aware, the sport was reduced from up to 21 to up to 11 because the sport was not exciting to watch. But has this 3rd ball philosophy made the game almost too quick?

Hi Simon,

Third ball is something that has reduced the length of rallies and I think reduced the spectator appeal.  The main though with this is the serve.  The rally is heavily weighted in favour of the server.

It is difficult for spectators to see the subtleties of serving.
