I've been trying to improve my balance when playing to improve my footwork and also my speed.  Of course, you need to bend your knees and stay low but where should you have your weight?  If my weight is too forward toward my toes, my balance seems off.  Leaning back onto your heels is definitely bad.  It seems like having your weight near the balls of your feet has the best balanced.  Having your weight on the balls of your feet so that your heels just lift off the ground feels like a good balanced position and seems to make it easier to move your feet.  What do you think?

You're on the right track with your observations about balance and weight distribution. It's essential to have a good stance that allows for quick movements and stability during play.  Firstly, take a look at our tutorial on the Basic Stance.

As you noted, keeping your weight on the balls of your feet is typically the best position. This setup allows for agile movements and quick adjustments during play. Your heels should not lift off the ground entirely; they should lightly touch the floor or be just above it. This slight contact helps maintain balance without compromising your ability to move swiftly.

Bending your knees is important, not just for lowering your stance, but also for keeping your weight centred and for reach. When you are lower you can reach further without having to move because your shoulder is also lower and closer to the contact point of the stroke.

Your upper body should lean slightly forward, over your centre of gravity. This helps in maintaining forward momentum and readiness. However, ensure you're not leaning too far forward as this can put unnecessary strain on your back and might throw you off balance when moving quickly.

Keep practicing, and you'll likely see your footwork and speed enhance as your balance improves.
