Hi Alois and Jeff,

I've played table tennis with different opponents, and one of them stomped their feet while serving the ball. What's the purpose with stomping feet? Is it to make their opponents surprised?

Thanks a lot!
Regards, Archel

Hi Archel,

People sometimes do this out of habit. Sometimes players might also do this so that their opponents can't hear the sound of the bat on the ball. The sound can give you some information on whether the ball has a lot of spin or not much.

I do stomp my left feet when serving but i do it because the timing of my serve gets better.

It could also be used to disguise the point of contact between the bat and ball. Maybe your opponent will misread the serve because they can't hear when you contact the ball because all they hear is your stomp.
