Coaching difficult student

I help out at a coaching session for youngsters, a new girl started and all she seems interested in is hitting the ball flat and hard. When I try and suggest the salute action and play the ball with a little less force so we can manage more than a 3 shot rally she is not happy. Have you any suggestions how to tackle this kind of beginner.

Hi Nigel,

It can be difficult with these sort of young players.

You could try starting a chart with her scores of number of hits on it.  We have a Consistency Chart as a download that may help you to get started.  Have a record column with her highest score.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the salute as yet and just focus on getting as many balls on the table as possible.

The other thing is that you shouldn’t spend too much time and effort on it.  Let her progress and see if she wants to do it.  Ultimately the drive has to come from her.

Good luck and let me know if you have any success.

Fast Pushing

Pushing short is a great option but you need variation in your game. When you push the ball long you want to make sure it is fast to try and get your opponent's out of position. Watch this video for some tips on how to play the fast long push with heaps of backspin.
