Switching between forehand and backhand

Strategy

Hi Alois & Jeff

I have come across a player who has a pattern or likes to switch the shots to either side of the table. What happens with my game is that :

a) I end up playing alternate forehand and backhand and the shots are weak as I am not sure where the ball is going to land

b) Also I am also not sure whether to take the ball on the backhand or pivot to take the ball on the forehand.

c) And sometimes I find that in this situation my forehand shot is weak as well as I am not in position to play an effective forehand loop.

I would like to know the best way to deal with this situation of handling alternate forehand and backhand shots and also to be able to take the attack to the opponent as I find myself on the defense mostly.

Thank You

Regards

Grenville

Hi Grenville,

Try to hit the ball cross court (Diagonally) more. This will mean that they will be forced to play down the line if they want to get you moving one to each side.  If they play down the lone and you play cross court you will soon have the advantage in the moving game.

If you feel like you can get around and play forehands from the backhand side as well then give it a try but it will mean a lot of moving.

During training get your training partner to move you side to side where you need to switch from forehand to backhand.  This will improve your movement.
