What is the deal with the players rubbing the table near the net. it appears to wipe sweat from the paddle hand but that seems like altering the surface of the table and why not use a towel.

Hi Ian,
This is usually a habit that players get into to wipe the sweat off their hands. They usually do it close to the net where the ball very rarely bounces. It doesn't really alter the playing surface too much.
Because you are not allowed to use your towel except every 6 points, I think this has become a way for players to dry their hands regularly. It also cools down the hand a little as well.
Some players though start to do it as a habit and routine even when it is not required.
The thickness of a table tennis table is the most important aspect of a table to ensure you get a true consistent bounce. Other things to consider are the net, portability, and storage space.
