hi,Alois

After five days i have to play against left hand penholder.  I don't know how to beat him.  We play one match and he won.  He has got very strong forehand topspin and he like to attack. But i am something like allround player.  Can you give me some advice how to beat him?

Hi Ivan,

Without seeing him play it is difficult but some general things are to try to make the first attack.  You can do this by serving effectively and short.  When you get an opportunity then make a topspin.

In general again, making the topspin to their forehand side can be effective.  It doesn't need to be fast but if you can generate more spin.  It is harder for a peholder to get over the block on the forehand side because of the natural angle of their bat.

Hope this helps a little.

Tactics Against a Good Short Pusher

Use a long push or a flick to open up the game against someone who is beating you at the short game. It might not be your favourite way to play but if you are losing the short game you need to mix things up. In the long run you certainly need to improve your own short game.

To see players playing penholders look up on youtube ITTF World Tour Grand finals Xu Xin vs Fan Zendong and Xu Xin vs Ma long those particular matches I have watched dozens of time and recently I have played a left handed penholder that usually beats me savagely but when I applied some tactics that I saw at the international level I won much more points

Good luck
