Teaching a topspin

Strokes

Greetings,

I got into a situation where a Lady trains me in fitness while I train her at the table in exchange.
She is a good hitter, but she struggles with brushing the ball.
While I am of course knowledgeable about the off-table exercises we struggle on the table.
I wonder how could I get her to brush the ball more while at the table.
I have already showed her all no-partner exercises I know but when she does them I am for no use.
I have tried to feed her with multiball but if I feed no-spin she hits - and if I feed backspin she either hits through or fails.
When I am normally passively blocking to her,she either throws the ball over my head or hits flat.
I have also tried blocking using my longpips so that it reflects her own spin level.
But still she misses or hits.

I am not a trainer - but I am the only person around willing to teach her.
I wonder what could I do better or if my approaches are at least a bit correct.

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

I would start slowly on the table and feed her the ball with a throw feed and see if she can get the contact of the ball.  Then if she gets comfortable with that, start to hit the ball back very slowly, perhaps just once or twice in a row.  Build her confidence in brushing the ball initially.

Forehand Block

The forehand block is one way to counter a topspin stroke hit to your forehand side. Learn this stroke and you will be able to keep yourself in the rally even when your opponent get the first attack in.

I wonder if raising the height of the net drastically, maybe even double or treble its height, so the only way to reliably get the ball on the table is to use top spin. Then play very slow so it's an exaggerated action to lift the ball over the net and down onto the table. Maybe if this is helpful in training topspin, Alois could do a video? On the negative side if the person training had too much trouble brushing the ball, I wouldn't want to have them disheartened by missing so much.

Hi Nigel , this is an excellent suggestion. We have done this with our Backhand Topspin Video by placing Stick about a meter above the net. This is a real exaggeration but is effective in getting the Player to brush the ball.

That is a great idea.
I have been aware of that, but I ignored it because I do not have means to make it real.
