Teaching friend with wrist problem

Strokes

Hello there!

I'm trying to teach my friend who is recovering from wrist surgery a while back. He still has a long time to fully recover and he can make most of the motions but not the "extreme" angle of the wrist that I tried to show him for forehand and backhand. Are there any alternatives that I can show or teach him. Maybe a different grip perhaps? Or is it bad practice to show him the shake hand grip but just not as much of an angle?

Thank you very much!

Hi Christopher,

He doesn’t need to use the wrist at all to start with.  Keep it quite firm to develop control.  To turn the bat forward he can turn his forearm rather than the wrist.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
